  1. Growing mushrooms with Button mushroom kits.

Farmer's markets are the place to be to get some of the freshest, most unique, and tasty vegetables, meats, and other goods including edible mushrooms of all kinds. They are also a great place to network and build community within your region among the many farmers and ranchers and the cities their work supports. Yet, over the winter a lot of these markets hibernate until spring, a few winter markets pop up here and there, but a lot of us are left with limited options to acquire farm-fresh food.

There are a lot of resources and kits available to help individuals learn to grow, and easily grow various fruits, vegetables, and often mushrooms. Mushrooms kits come in all different sizes and varieties from the common button mushrooms to more exotics such as oysters, shiitake, lions

  3. coffee, an easy and beautiful indoor addition

Coffee is one of the world’s favorite drinks and did you know that coffee trees can be grown indoors like many house plants? For some, coffee is just coffee, but others are in love with the depth of flavors and aromas each cup brings.

There are so many different names out there too; Java from the island of Java, Mocha beans from the Arabian Peninsula, Altera from the high slopes of Mexico, and Kona from the Hawaiian island, to name just a few. Coffee flavor is dependent not only on where it is grown but also on how it is grown and processed. The chain of events from the seed to the moment it pours into your mug makes each experience unique. Coffee takes a long journey and that’s something to appreciate and to think all those complex flavors are due to so many different factors.

The earliest records of coffee being used by humans are from the sixteenth-century Sufi monasteries. The debate is ongoing reg

  4. Vermicomposting homemade gold, well blackgold

Vermicomposting creates high-quality organic soil building compost called castings, and those castings can be mixed into potting soil, added directly to the soil or it can be brewed into a compost tea to unleash a slew of beneficial microbes that help our garden explode in growth and health.

In the summer of 2019, while growing hemp I had applied a shovel-full of worm castings in the season when the plants were full-size bushes, just before flowering. What was so amazing about this application of worm casting was where I applied an inch or two of worm casting the roots shot up into this nutrient. I was amazed at how quickly the roots shot up into the worm castings. This is why we call it black gold, its powerful stuff that plants love. Taken one step further it can also create an amazing garden tea full of beneficial

  5. Grow your own fresh herbs year-round!

Some dishes are not possible without fresh herbs.

Such as a Caprese salad or margarita pizza, they are not the same without fresh basil. Topping chicken alfredo without fresh parsley just isn't the same. Impress yourself or a guest when you serve mint mojitos with fresh mint in December, it will burst with flavor!

I absolutely love tossing roasted veggies with a mix of fresh parsley, thyme, and rosemary will be uplifting during the long winter months. I love herbs in the kitchen, and herbs in the kitchen that are fresh and grown by myself are so much more satisfying.

Using fresh herbs can go beyond the dish and enhance our lifestyle and lower the cost of grocery visits. Fresh

  6. Citrus trees: a great indoor or patio addition.

Citrus is one of my favorite house plants to grow. Citrus has beautiful and fragrant blooms, dark green leaves, and some amazing home-grown fruit.

If you live in a location where growing citrus outdoors year-round is not an option, there are some awesome dwarf varieties available to you.

You can find most types of citrus from grapefruit, lime, lemon, kumquat, orange, tangerine, and possibly something quite unique. Just make sure they are dwarf varieties if you are growing indoors.

Citrus does best indoors when the temperature of the room is above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. They will perform best near a window or patio door that gets lots of sunlight,
