Great Taste for Warm Climates

Southern Highbush, Mid-Season

One of the finest flavored and most widely adapted Blueberries ever released, the Southmoon Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum x Vaccinium darrowi x Vaccinium ashei x Vaccinium angustifolium) is a complex hybrid. Introduced by the University of Florida in 1995, it combines the finest traits of Highbush varieties and was backcrossed to wild low-chill native Florida varieties.

An Mid-Season bearing Southern Highbush, this variety isn't as fussy as other Blueberries. For instance, Southmoon tolerates a higher pH soil. Any soil pH up to 6.0, the plant will thrive and be productive. It does very well in sandy soil if amended with organic material.

Southmoon works particularly well in warmer climates due to its low chill requirement (it only requires 400 chill hours) and will even tolerate light frost. It ripens in in the early season. You should expect fruit in 2 or 3 years.

The upright growth of the plant lends itself to easy harvesting either by hand in the You Pick orchard, or the home garden. Commercial growers find that it is perfect for mechanical harvesting, as well.

Southmoon is a beautiful ornamental plant in the landscape or in a patio container. With its tight growth habit, it makes a wonderful (and unique) hedge plant in the landscape to block out that unwanted view.

For larger crops, we recommend planting varieties with different ripening times along with Southmoon to extend your harvest period.

In areas where Blueberries don't do well in the ground, try planting Southmoon in containers. That way, it's easier to provide the perfect soil and fertility conditions. Fertilize with an organic acid fertilizer quarterly to maintain a healthy, productive plant.

Blueberries are always a lot of fun to have in the home landscape. They're not only beautiful and fruitful, but also provide a harvest that has incredible health benefits for the entire family.

Southmoon Blueberry is a terrific choice for warm climate gardens and homesteaders.
