Beloved Native Perennial Features Purple Tones
New England Aster (Aster novae-angliae, or Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) is a lovely perennial is a North American native wildflower found along the banks of streams and surrounding moist, low-lying meadows. It's also a wonderfully vivid color choice to use in the landscape for blooms from August through September.
On a single plant, you can see blooms that span the whole spectrum, from hot red-violet through cool blue-violet. Even though it has a rough stem and coarse, narrow leaves, it looks finely textured from a distance. This is a dynamic plant that brings a new depth to your landscape.
It will also be absolutely covered with butterflies and pollinators from dawn through dusk. Definitely one of nature's incredible shows, and so interesting to watch. Plan to add comfy seating nearby.
It grows tall, so can handle a spot near the back of a border. Cover its long legs with a sturdy groundcover rose or add shorter shrubs like the Buzz series of butterfly bushes in front.
It would be fun to use this native as a "Filler" in a large container garden. Pinch back the tips of the plant in mid-July, you'll keep it a bit bushier and more compact.
Or, choose to plant a completely native flower garden with a collection of Asters, Coneflowers, Goldenrod, Black-Eyed Susans, Phlox and Gallardia. LetsPlantify.com is happy to offer a very wide variety of native wildflowers.
Please understand that we must comply with local and state regulations. Some of these plants do a little "too well" in certain areas and are considered invasive. That's why we've invested in Plant Sentry™ to protect your yard and community.
