Use Massachusetts Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 'Massachusetts' or Bearberry) as a fabulous evergreen plant to solve your groundcover needs just beautifully. Not all of us are so fortunate to have just the right spot for this low growing, wide spreading flowering native.
It performs best in sparse soils without fertilization and is extremely cold hardy. Delicate rounded leaves cover the ground-hugging branches and are joined by pretty pink flowers in early spring. The shrub is covered in red berries in fall and birds flock to feast.
Fine-textured, this is a wonderful selection for the right site to prevent soil erosion. It will drape softly over a rock wall to soften the look. Plant this to naturalize in rougher areas of your property or use along the edge of garden borders in full sun.
