- Can Be Sheared
- Cold Hardy
- Tolerates Periodically Wet Soils
- Shiny Evergreen Leaves
Inkberry Nordic Compact Inkberry (Ilex glabra 'Chamzin') is an outstanding, carefree, and compact shrub that fits beautifully into modern landscapes.
The evergreen leaves are a deep lustrous green and glisten in sunlight. It is excellent for foundation, hedges, masses, and as an accent plant. It is best to follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system.
Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a tidy, neat appearance, shear annually to shape.
Nordic Compact is well suited to low hedges. Single specimens can also be sheared for topiary-like precision.
Because of wind resistance, it makes an excellent choice that helps with snow drifts. Plant it along the driveway to reduce your shoveling task.
This Inkberry prefers moist, well-drained, slightly-acidic soils, rich in organic matter. It is tolerant of continually wet soils and can be easily pruned to maintain size and shape.
Small inconspicuous flowers are produced that if pollinated may produce small fruit that ripens to dark colored berries in the fall. If no other plants are around, fruit is typically not set. With or without any fruit, it is a fantastic plant. This useful and beautiful plant is tolerant of poorly-drained soils.
