How to Use Elliott Blueberry in the Landscape

With a very erect branch structure, an Elliott hedge would make a charming and noteworthy garden feature. Use near your patio, close to the kitchen door.

Create a hedgerow by planting four to six feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.

Blueberries need acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 to 5.5. Test your soil before you plant in the ground.

You can amend soil to adjust pH, but it takes time and the changes must be done at the root level. If you have alkaline soil, grow Elliott in wide outdoor containers.

If Rhododendrons or Lupines grow wild in your local area, you shouldn't have much trouble. Otherwise, control the soil environment with container culture.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Blueberries perform best in full sun to partial shade. They need at least four hours of direct sun and morning sun is best.

Give it well-drained soil that sheds water quickly after a rain or watering. Improve drainage in a raised bed, or plant in containers.

Use wide outdoor pots that fit their shallow roots systems. Add drainage holes and elevate the pot. Please don't use saucers under container-grown Blueberries.

Fill containers with a soil mix designed for acid loving plants. Mix handfuls of peat moss and mulch with pine straw or bark.

Apply a moderate amount of water regularly, especially during fruit development. Use a rain barrel to collect neutral pH rainwater.

Elliott does need hard pruning periodically. Rejuvenate the oldest, thickest stems every few years. Leave the young, productive stems in place.

Fertilize with an ericaceous formula for acid-loving plants in early spring. Follow the directions on the label.
