How to Use Chandler Blueberry in the Landscape

Imagine spending a little time in your Victory Garden picking fresh berries for your dinner.

Try a row of Blueberries as a tall backdrop to your annual veggies. Dream of big-berried, homemade pie that really fills you up, especially after the second slice.

If you've got a little bit of sunshine on your property, you should be able to grow this plant. Decide if you'll grow in-ground or in containers.

Blueberries do like acidic soil with a pH betwee 4.5 - 5.5. If you live in the Southeast or Northwest, you'll likely have this kind of soil.

If you see Rhododendrons grow wild nearby, you'll be able to grow a flourishing crop of fresh, huge Chandler berries. This variety was developed in New Jersey, and handles Eastern Seaboard conditions without trouble.

Everywhere else? You should test your soil to understand the pH.

If your soil and tap water are alkaline, you might want to consider using them in containers. It's easy to maintain the proper pH if you make your own soil in that circumstance.

They make a handsome low hedge with many seasons of interest. And no one said a hedge needed to be straight.

Follow the lay of your land with curving, natural lines. You'll add definition and a heaping amount of charm, with white blooms, blueberries and brilliant orangey-red fall color.

Create a low hedge by planting four to six feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next; and the closer you plant, the more solid the screen becomes.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Fruiting plants generally need full sun, with at least four hours of direct sun a day. Blueberry plants can handle a little afternoon shade, especially in warmer zones.

Test your soil with a kit or send it to your local Ag Extension office. Chandler will do best in well-drained soil, so elevate the planting with extra amended soil, if required.

If you plant in large, exterior containers, select a pot that is wider than deep to accommodate the shallow root system. Add additional drainage holes if needed.

Never use saucers under outdoor containers. Rather, use bricks, pot feet, or a wheeled caddy with drainage holes underneath.

Use an acid loving plant soil mix and add pathway bark or pine straw to the mix. Top with pine straw or bark mulch, and fertilize with a formula for acid-loving plants according to the directions on the label.

You'll want to test your soil regularly to ensure your amendment efforts aren't being overdone. Bottom line, if you are getting blueberries, you're doing it right.

Give plants a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. We recommend that you use a rain barrel to catch and store neutral pH rainwater.
