Now, this is a modern Japanese Barberry!

Beautiful Concorde Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Concorde') makes a perfect, tiny accent shrub. Deliciously dark purple foliage provides a dramatic contrast to the everyday, hum-drum green of other plants.

Pretty, teardrop-shaped leaves emerge in spring bright red, then turn an amazing royal royal purple color for the summer. The leaves intensify into deep red in the fall.

The nice, rounded shape stays small, and very rarely needs pruning. There is always space for the natural dwarf Concorde in any landscape.

The compact size is so easy to incorporate into your foundation planting or to edge a border.

No need to worry about invasive seeds or fruits with Concorde Barberry. This selection does produce yellow spring flowers, but they mature into very few red berries that are not considered viable.

Concorde Barberry is not considered invasive. It is the answer for Barberry plants!

How to Use Concorde Barberry in the Landscape

This is a wonderful plant to add interest to your foundation plantings. Add them as a short, colorful hedge to punch up the visual impact of existing evergreens.

Barberries do have thorns, so plant it at least 2 feet away from the sidewalk. This will allow for mature spread, while preventing any snags to clothing.

Repeat them in the front of any planting beds for fabulous color. Add them as an intensely colorful Thriller to containers. Or, use it as a colorful replacement for Boxwood to set off a garden bed filled with blooming summer annuals.

Live on a corner lot? Include a low hedge of this plant to stop people from cutting across your lawn. Place it anywhere you want a friendly, colorful way to direct traffic through your landscape.

Gardens in deer country appreciate this plant's resistance to deer. Many people plant this shrub as a barrier plant to discourage deer from grazing in their garden beds.

These easy-care shrubs are great in commercial landscapes, too. Let them draw the eye and grab attention wherever they are used.

Create a solid, low hedge by planting them 18 inches apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next plant.

Fill a wide, open area with a mass planting of pest-free Concorde Barberry. Use zigzagging, staggered rows of plants 18 inches apart on center. Mulch between plants and keep new mass plantings weeded until the plants grow together and touch.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Provide a spot in full sun and well-drained soils for best results. The color will not be as vivid in partially shaded locations.

Pruning is only required to change its shape or overall size. Wear thick, leather gloves before working with Barberry.

A slightly acidic soil will benefit this slow-growing, pest-free shrub. Use a fertilizer formula for Acid Loving plants according to label directions.

Add a thick layer of pine bark or pine straw mulch over the root system to keep it cool. Pull the mulch back from the main stems by 6 inches for good air circulation.

Please baby it a bit as a new plant. Water it well when you unbox it, following our printed instructions in every box.

For the first several weeks, get out there and poke your finger in the soil next to the plant every other day or so.

Is the soil starting to get dry? Saturate the area. Is the ground under the surface still moist? Skip watering that day.

In a normal year, Barberry isn't a deer favorite, and it is listed as Deer Resistant. However, deer will eat anything if they are hungry enough.

In deer country, use Deer Repellent Spray on every single new planting. Reapply according to the directions through the growing season.
