How to Use Bridal Veil Astilbe in the Landscape

Although we think these look best as part of a massed planting, you can certainly add a single plant as a specimen. Let it grace a memorial stone, or sit at the foot of a well-loved garden statue.

Use two flanking either side of a shaded gate as a bright welcome. Paint the gate white, yellow or indigo blue, whatever you like. The pure tones of Bridal Veil partner with any color.

Run several of them along the length of a forgotten side yard to heighten the journey by creating anticipation for the destination.

Use them to define the boundary between a manicured lawn and a naturalized area.

Plant on the east or west side of mature evergreen trees in a raised bed.

Bridal Veil loves 4 hours of sunlight a day. It is a durable plant that should do well with a bit more sun, as long as the soil doesn't get too dry.

When planting, add a small handful or two of peat moss or leaf compost to your backfill soil. This plant responds beautifully when Root Booster beneficial soil additive is added to the top inches of soil during planting. Apply according to the directions.

While it does need well-drained soil in winter, Astilbe likes to remain moist in summertime. Use at least 3 inches of mulch over the root system to cut down on surface evaporation. Plan to provide supplemental water on a regular basis.

Because they need water, you'll be tempted to place them where your lawn sprinklers can reach them. Just take care when using lawn fertilizers nearby. Those are nitrogen-rich formulas that will reduce the blooming in your perennials.

Instead, give your Astilbes a good, slow-release fertilizer for flowering plants in early spring. Top dress with compost in spring, too.

In order to keep Bridal Veil Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune in early spring.
