Lemony Yellow Cupped Flower: Eranthis Hyemalis

  • Late Winter, Early Spring Blooms
  • Can Push Through Snow
  • Cheerful Yellow Blooms
  • Great in Containers

You may call the Eranthis Hyemalis "darling," "cheerful," "sweet," or "sunny," but never call her late to spring. This lemon yellow blooming planting is often referred to as Winter Aconite and is often regarded as a harbinger of spring, blooming even before crocuses have a chance. With stunning yellow blooms and fascinating green collars, the Winter Aconite is a welcome guest in a wide range of roles in the garden.

These petite plants may not grow very tall, but as one of the few early spring-blooming bulbs, what they lack in height they make up for in charm and color.

The Winter Aconite's stems push upward toward the sun, where they sport radiating collars: basals of deeply lobed bright green leaves. Soon after, they burst with bright yellow cupped blooms that shout, "Hey! Aren't I striking? I'm a sign of things to come and spring is almost here!" It will be hard to resist picking some since they'll be the first color you'll see for the year. Luckily, you can pluck as many of the buttercup-like blooms as you please. They're quite durable and there's no shortage of their pleasant flowers.

Your Winter Aconite are deer resistant and happy to fill in where needed. They make an excellent choice for low-growing blooms at the base of evergreens or they're happy to light up your yard as a spectacular mass planting. After blooms, their leaves fill in to create a sea of green as a slow-spreading groundcover.

They are happiest in partial sun most of the year and full sun during winter. Because they naturalize, you may want to divide them every so often. They don't spread rapidly and need about a year to rebound after, so you can wait a while before doing so.

Order your true harbingers of spring now and await a golden show in early spring!

We will ship your bulbs based on the correct planting time for your area.
