How to Use Purple Satin® Rose of Sharon Tree Form in the Landscape

There are so many ways to enjoy these plants. Add them where you want a bold pop of floral fantasy, and the cool, green screen of textured foliage.

Why not run a series of these along the length of your fence. Give it full sun and medium moisture, and they'll add height, privacy and effortless charm.

Create a lovely garden feature for family and friends to enjoy. It's easy...just plant a mix of small shrubs—including evergreen, foliage and flowering varieties—underneath them.

Include some of the beautiful fruiting shrubs, like Cabernet Splash Blueberry. Look for ways to grow food whenever you can.

If you've already gone all-in on a modern Victory Garden, leverage the flower power of Purple Satin Rose of Sharon Tree Form to draw pollinators. Plant a row of them on the company-side of your Kitchen Garden, and you'll likely see much larger harvests.

Consider them the "living wallpaper" in a chic Garden Room. Create tall walls with Hedge Cotoneaster, Linebacker Distylium, Bay Laurel or Cherry Laurel.

Then, add three, five or seven Purple Satin Rose of Sharon Tree Form. Even space your plants six feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next.

Decorator tip: use an odd-number of plants. This simply visually works much better than an even number.

On properties with mature landscaping, you can add Purple Satin Rose of Sharon Tree Forms for color. Add one at the start of an existing hedge, and one at the end.

Plant them with other colors, too. LetsPlantify.com is so excited to offer these wonderful tree form plants. Our growers are consistently some of the very best in the business!

#ProPlantTips for Care

The needs of these marvelous small trees are quite simple. Site them correctly, water them regularly and you'll enjoy a great performance year after year.

Ensure they have plenty of sun, give them a three-inch layer of wood mulch over the root systems. Don't let mulch touch the trunk, pull it back for proper air circulation.

Well-drained soil is important. Use at least a 20" outdoor container; or build a raised bed if you see puddles for a long time after a rainfall.

These tree form plants need a medium amount of water on a regular basis. Make getting out in your yard and running the hose on them a wonderful part of your weekly routine.

If you don't have time, try running a line of drip irrigation tubing, fitted with the appropriate nozzles. Get a timer to automate the flow from your hose. This is an intermediate (and fun) house project.

You'll need to keep your shrub pruned once a year in early spring. We recommend that you study your shrub through the year to develop a yearly pruning plan. Or simply follow these simple steps:

Once that nice spring weather makes an appearance, grab those sharpened shears and reduce the overall size of your Tree Form to a two to three-foot rounded sphere.

If you happen to have a larger, older, shrub, feel free to shear back to a three to four-foot rounded sphere.

Open the canopy to allow sunlight and air circulation. Remove crossing branches, thin out new growth and reduce the height as desired. Just make sure that you're done pruning by the time new growth starts. Otherwise, you might accidentally damage the flowers that are developing!

Plan to spend perhaps an hour of time (likely much less) doing this yearly chore. Bring a thermos of hot coffee with you to bolster your resolve.

Fertilize in early spring, as well. Make sure you get a formula for flowering plants. Keep nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizer well away from your Rose of Sharon tree form plant.

Although rated as deer resistant, we always recommend that you spray repellent on all new plants if you live with deer pressure. Deer are hungry and curious, so you'll want to reapply according to the directions.

Don't miss a season without these special small trees. You'll fall in love with their gracious good looks and durable, sturdy charm.
