The needs of these marvelous small trees are quite simple. Site them correctly, water them regularly and you'll enjoy a great performance year after year.

Ensure they have plenty of sun, give them a three-inch layer of wood mulch over the root systems. Don't let mulch touch the trunk, pull it back for proper air circulation.

Well-drained soil is important. Use at least a 20" outdoor container; or build a raised bed if you see puddles for a long time after a rainfall.

These tree form plants need a medium amount of water on a regular basis. Make getting out in your yard and running the hose on them a wonderful part of your weekly routine.

If you don't have time, try running a line of drip irrigation tubing, fitted with the appropriate nozzles. Get a timer to automate the flow from your hose. This is an intermediate (and fun) house project.

You'll need to keep your shrub pruned once a year in early spring. We recommend that you study your shrub through the year to develop a yearly pruning plan. Or simply follow these simple steps:
