How to Use Thorndale English Ivy in the Landscape

Wouldn't you rather see green foliage than unsightly retaining walls? Plant these along the base of your hardscaped design elements and turn them into a magnificent garden feature.

Cover a trellis to screen your outdoor kitchen or entertainment area. Prep an enclosure to hide the garbage cans or compost pile. Use Ivy as a climbing vine to hide it all away. Presto!

They are wonderful groundcovers on slopes, and much safer than trying to mow turf. Create a dense mass planting in a hurry by planting these vines 30 inches apart starting at the top of the slope.

Add additional rows 5 to 10 feet down the slope. The closer you space them, the faster they fill in for you.

Train them to fill in downwards. It won't take long at all to achieve a pretty "sea" of green.

Mulch between plants and keep new mass plantings weeded. Water regularly during the first season, and in times of drought.

Ivy leaves create a thick canopy a bit above ground level. They suppress weeds and look amazing at the same time.

Let them cover a boring old chain link fence. Create a cool, green, shaded private space for yourself and your family in a jiffy.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Provide well-drained soil, if possible. Ivy is quite adaptable, but you'll get the best results if water drains away quickly.

Ivy is very hardy and trouble-free. It tolerates full sun or partial shade with at least four hours of direct sunlight a day.

It thrives with a regular schedule of medium water. Use a light layer of wood mulch over the top to protect against winter damage in Zone 5.

Remember to give a good, long drink in late fall before you turn off the hose or sprinkler system for the winter. Good hydration protects the evergreen foliage from searing winter winds.

Contain the spread or height by trimming up the edges with a pair of garden shears at any time. Rejuvenate the vines in early spring by pruning out thick, woody stems just above a swelling bud at a 45-degree angle. You'll enjoy a fresh green flush of growth.

If you grow your Thorndale English Ivy as a houseplant, give them bright light and regular water. Mist them regularly for proper humidity levels. You'll love their perky style in large hanging baskets.

These classic plants have earned a spot in the hearts and minds of gardeners across the globe. If we can safely ship into your climate, enjoy them in your landscape. Order Thorndale Ivy today!
