How to Use Limelight Hydrangea Tree in the Landscape

This amazing plant is showy for months, and it's versatile, too. Grow it in containers, or in the ground.

Create a special "garden moment" with one or more Limelight Hydrangea trees as a special backdrop. Designers call these special spots a vignette, and they can be as personalized as you are.

Place a few objects as design elements near your new tree. Include a chair, a table, and low-growing perennials. Make choices that suit your style...Limelight can carry off just about any look.

Are you a country critter? Create an informal tableau using a low-slung Adirondack chair in its shade. Place your favorite garden sculpture and pop in some small Spirea bushes nearby.

Prefer a bit more poise? Just use a classical Grecian statue and Boxwood in a traditional Chippendale planter.

Feeling funkier than that? Place dark purple Ebb-Tide Roses in streamlined metal containers on the south side of your tree. Pop in a hot pink flamingo statue.

Limelight is a beautiful workhorse in the garden. It coordinates beautifully with other plants. Dress it up or down, anyway you like! No need to overthink it...Limelight Hydrangea tree makes everything around it look good.

These trees will look fabulous planted in your courtyard, or near your entryway and patio. But you can also include these special trees in other areas to maximize their flowering display.

Pump up the charm of your long-established landscape plantings. Try one in front of the picture window. Use one at the garden gate.

Add a row of Limelight Hydrangea trees in front of a stand of mature evergreens. Plant a semicircle of Skywalker Boxwood behind it for additional gravity to your garden scene.

Use them as a "Thriller" in outdoor containers along the patio or flanking your front door. Place one at the edge of a pond to enjoy its reflection in the water. Life is good.

March a few up your front sidewalk for a cheery welcome that really stands out. Plant them about 10 feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next.

Try a single plant as a specimen to easily anchor a corner of a house or building. Enlarge your existing foundation planting as needed.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Limelight will tolerate partial shade, but really loves plenty of sunlight to grow. Full sun means more flowers.

In the hottest areas, give this variety afternoon shade. It needs at least four hours of sunlight a day.

It will adapt to just about any soil type, as long as it drains well. If you have ground that stays soggy after a rain, you may have poorly drained soils.

Create a raised mound of soil about 18 inches above your native soil to improve your drainage. You'll plant directly into that mound. Add a landscape edge to create a raised bed.

Provide a medium amount of water on a regular basis. This is especially important while the tree is young, during flower production, and for plants kept in containers.

Apply mulch to a depth of three inches. Pull it back at least a few inches from the main trunk. Reapply regularly.

Prune Limelight tree-form to shape in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Grab a pair of shears and reduce the overall size to a two to three foot sphere.

If you have a larger tree, you can always reduce it to a three to four foot sphere to keep a bit of height. Just make sure it's done before the growing begins. That way you won't damage any of the coming flower power!

Leave last year's flower heads on for winter interest. Prune them only after the new growth has started to expand.
