Every landscape needs a beautiful focal point, and the Profusion Crabapple (Malus x moerlandsii Profusion') shines all year long. From the abundant spring flower show to the lavish fruiting display, this popular flowering Crabapple offers a superior visual display.

Plant this classic, heirloom ornamental front and center as a specimen in your landscape design. Or, repeat the use as a magnificent backdrop along the length of your fence or driveway.

This improved variety originated in the Netherlands and has graced landscapes on both sides of the Atlantic for over a century. The intense color show of the spring bloom starts when red buds swell on bare branches.

The buds open into very noteworthy blossoms that blanket the tree in a brilliant splash of violet-red flowers, that soften to a vibrant hot-pink. This tree is simply extraordinary in spring!

Watch as butterflies come to visit every bloom. Planting a Profusion is a wonderful way to welcome each year's new growing season.

Enjoy the delightful red shade of the new spring foliage. Over time, the hue mellows to a rich, reddish-bronze overcast on the green summer foliage. Gradually, the leaves develop a golden hue for fall color display.

In autumn, the Profusion Crabapple blooms have developed into lovely dark maroon fruit that attracts local songbirds to your yard. The persistent red fruit hangs like decorative ornaments through the fall and winter. Migrating birds coming north again in late winter will be grateful for the energy source.

Why not harvest a few for yourself and your family? Edible Profusion Crabapples are a wonderful addition to homemade jellies.

Even in winter, the trees offer extended landscape appeal. With a compact, rounded shape, the dark-gray branch tips sweep downward in a very romantic way.

Profusion Crabapple is an exceptional tree for your yard. Everyone in the neighborhood will notice the eye-catching spring blooms.

Profusion Crabapple shows great resistance to rust and leaf spot, as well as good resistance to powdery mildew, scab and fire blight. The great disease resistance makes it a great choice of home gardeners who are concerned about spraying or the commercial landscaper looking for low maintenance accent trees.

How to Use Profusion Crabapple in the Landscape

Profusion Crabapple is an ideal medium-sized tree. Use it as a focal point in the yard, or as an accent tree in the background of your landscape. They make an ideal lawn tree.

It makes a marvelous single specimen planted near your patio for incredible decoration. Or, use near your front door to easily boost curb appeal near the entrance. Partner with formally sheared Boxwood, or informally grown Yew shrubs.

Try planting 3, 5 or 7 in a loosely zigzagging group to create a small grove. Be sure to look at all the Crabapple varieties grown by LetsPlantify.com. You'll be tempted to splurge on a naturalized, mixed planting and build an ecologically-sound, biodiverse landscape design.

Profusion can be planted 12 feet apart on center as a large screen to create flowering walls of an outdoor garden room. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Allow the lower branches to remain on the tree for best results.

Or, extend that distance to 24 feet apart on center, to march a uniform line down the length of your driveway. You'll easily gain a memorable, polished garden design for many, many years; for only the cost of a few trees.

For a fantastic look, try the age-old technique of espalier pruning to decorate a wall or fence. Search our garden blog for more information on this unusual and effective method.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Crabapples aren't fussy, but they do require well-drained soil. Plant it in full sun, especially where they'll get early morning sunlight.

Air circulation is important to most plants. Profusion is a disease resistant variety, but it's best to avoid planting in low-lying or poorly ventilated areas that trap air.

After the first few seasons, Crabapples can tolerate some drought, but they perform at their best when given regular water. In the first season, provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis.

Mulch 3 to 4 inches deep and spread it out to 3 feet outside of the canopy. This will keep the root system nice and cool and ensure adequate surface moisture, especially in areas with warmer climates.

Profusion Crabapple will require little pruning, mostly to keep the tree growing in a balanced fashion.

Don't prune Crabapple trees in spring once they have started flowering. It's ok to prune in summer once the blooms have fully faded. The very best time to prune is late winter.

Plant a Profusion Crabapple anywhere you'd like a strong, ornamental focal point in your landscape. You won't be disappointed with this exceptional ornamental tree. Order today!
