One of the Easiest Blueberries

Southern Highbush, Mid to Late Season

Sunshine Blue Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum 'Sunshine Blue') is a Southern Highbush selection that produces firm and tangy dime-sized berries. A natural dwarf, Sunshine Blue's compact rounded habit make it an ideal plant for landscape and patio container use.

Imagine picking your healthy breakfast from your very own Blueberries early in the season!

Sunshine Blue is an Mid to Late Season variety, and the summer fruit is fantastic. You'll love the traditional rich Blueberry flavor.

Early research noted the Sunshine Blue's tolerance to drought and higher pH soils. This made it an immediate success in the Southern Seaboard and Western states. Bred for milder climates, the Sunshine Blue has proven to be widely adapted to both warmer and colder climates.

Typically, Southern Highbush require another Blueberry selection to maximize their production. But even though Sunshine Blue will produce a larger crop with a pollinator, the amount of fruit produced without one will be plentiful. People report harvesting 5 to 10 pounds per bush!

Sunshine Blue is one of the most dependably self-fruitful varieties of the Southern Highbush selections.

This edible plant also has wonderful ornamental value and should be considered for use even if you won't use the fruit. (Don't worry, hungry songbirds will eat any that you don't get to!)

Sunshine Blue is an ornamental evergreen and produces an abundance of delicious berries. A profuse bloomer, you'll love seeing beautiful bell-shaped white and pink flowers in spring. Evergreen in milder climates, the dark green foliage turns to a brilliant red in the fall and remains red throughout the winter. It then turns back to a dark green in the spring. In colder climates, Sunshine Blue loses its foliage the same as other Blueberry varieties.

Sunshine Blue is an easy care Blueberry that only requires a pH of 6.5 or below to thrive. This is much higher than other blueberry varieties will tolerate. In a container, simply use an acidic potting soil that is labeled for Azaleas, Camelias and Rhododendrons. You'll be impressed with how fast this small plant produces.

If you'll plant in the ground, we recommend getting your soil tested. You'll also want to get your water tested for high pH, too. High pH irrigation water should be buffered with more frequent applications of acid fertilizers, or consider using only rain water.

Before new growth begins, prune off twiggy growth, leaving only main stems to prevent overbearing. Complement its blue tones with plants bearing bronze or reddish leaves.

What a delight! Compact habit, beautiful flowers and fall color, AND the added benefit of healthy, tasty Blueberries. We predict you'll want several of these useful beauties.
