What Birdseed Attracts What?

What Birdseed Attracts What?

The world of wild birds and the seeds that feed them feel endless. At least in our eyes it does! You constantly hear people exclaiming that they love when Cardinals visit their yard, but Bluebirds are their favorite.

Woodpeckers are interesting to watch, but Jays are more up my alley. Others ask “Why can’t I seem to get any Chickadees or Doves to stop by?” With no hint at an answer, people begin to assure themselves that it’s merely because there aren’t those types of birds nearby.

But there are! All you need is the correct type of seed to attract them. Now comes the big question..”Which bird seed do I want?”

Black Oil Sunflower Seed

If you’re looking to attract all sorts of flying friends, Black Oil Sunflower is your go-to. In fact, it is the most sought after seed by backyard bird enthusiasts. Looking to join the club? I wouldn't hesitate to!

From Jays, Woodpeckers, Cardinals and Chickadees to American Goldfinches, House Sparrows, Blackbirds and everything in between, this variety of seed attracts them all.

Both small and large birds enjoy the thinner hull this seed provides. Not to mention, it is head over heels for nutritional value with important oils and micronutrients added.

Easily place it in hoppers, platform feeders, and even tube feeders for the feathered specimens to enjoy. Not sure which bird feeders best suit your needs? Check out our recent blog over the best on the market!

Hulled Sunflower Seeds

If you’re an advocate for economical safe and waste-free products, crack open our Hulled Sunflower Seeds or what our experts at Plantify like to call “Sunflower Meat.”

Birds don’t eat the husks of other seeds, which leads to a mess in the works under your charming feeders. The extra money invested in this food goes towards the no waste being left behind!

Similar to the previous seed, Sunflower Meat will bring Finches, Cardinals, Siskins, Chickadees, and a few Woodpeckers to a landscape.

You’ll even get to enjoy your feathered friends for a longer period while sipping tea each morning. The anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and antioxidants found within Sunflower Meat keeps the birds living longer, happier and healthier lives.

Safflower Seed

The bitterness of Safflower Wild Bird Feed makes it unique compared to the others. Birds love it and squirrels can’t stand it! No need to fret about your feeders being bombarded with those pesky rodents.

Once this food is gently poured for a feast, start to admire the Mourning Doves, Tufted Titmouses, Song Sparrows, Blue Jays, Red-Bellied Woodpeckers and more that fly in for a pitstop.

However, there a few things to keep in mind when feeding Safflower:

  1. Give the birds time to adjust to this seed.

Safflower is not native to North America, so birds here don't realize what the all white seed is or even that they can eat it. In fact, it can take up to six weeks to fully adjust to this seed.

However, once they adjust they will be back for more! Trust us when we say, it’s worth the wait

  1. Offer only Safflower; don't mix it with any other seeds.

Otherwise, squirrels and Blackbirds merely use the option to avoid the Safflower and eat the seeds they like. These picky eaters will pick out one seed at a time and throw the ones they don’t enjoy on the ground to only continue looking for seeds they do like.

  1. Keep safflower out year round.

This is a bonus for you and the birds! Having constant access to the same seed eliminated adjustment periods and continues to encourage the fowls to come back.

Nyjer Seed

To attract Goldfinches upon Goldfinches, Nyjer Seed has you covered. In fact, it will have the birds going completely out of their way to visit a feeder with Nyjer Seeds!

To put it simply, they just can’t get enough of the super small seeds. But you'll need a special feeder for the petite size and our favorite Jacobi Jayne Yellow Ring Pull Feeder is fresh off the market.

Now, we know what you are thinking. “Nyjer is a thistle and I absolutely, positively don’t want that growing in the landscape” Have no fear, these seeds are heat treated so they are prohibited from sprouting.

You’ll want to feed this seed fresh as they are very susceptible to spoiling. However, Plantify distributes from trusted sources who are well versed in transporting these seeds. We’ll have them to you long before they could even think about spoiling!
