Craving an ornamental tree with a boldly dramatic look to entice visitors to a secluded corner of your landscape? Or, need an "over the top" focal point to place front and center in your garden design?

Extreme foliage makes the Black Pearl™ Redbud (Cercis canadensis 'JN16'') a stand up selection. Turn heads with glossy heart-shaped leaves the color of blackberries.

Black Pearl Redbud packs a wallop. This fascinating cultivar of native Eastern Redbud keeps your interest all season-long.

The display starts very early. Treat yourself to a dynamic flowering display of electric purple-lavender-pink blooms.

The flower power is extremely noticeable. Redbud blooms "pop", because they develop while the branches are bare of leaves.

You'll see the lavish floral display on each branch, and down the trunk in early spring. Dark gray bark makes a perfect, high-impact contrast.

The flowers last for weeks! Feel good about supporting local pollinators, who appreciate this early nectar source.

Black Pearl adds another impressive quality when the lustrous new leaves start to emerge. Their shine is so intense, they almost look waxed.

Leathery leaves are a stunning ornamental feature. The color is such a deep, dark-purple; you'll swear it's black.

Spend just a moment imagining this compact tree that spreads a bit wider than tall. It's densely covered with extraordinary black leaves that hang on long petioles and catch every breeze.

This tree will be the pride of your place, and the talk of your neighborhood. It's small enough to fit in many places, and special enough to be given as a thoughtful gift.

Even as the year winds down, Black Pearl Redbud continues to impress. The healthy foliage simply deepens even further for exceptional fall color.

Don't miss your chance to own a Black Pearl Redbud. These popular deep purple-leaved Redbud trees are eagerly sought after by property owners across a wide geographic area.

How to Use Black Pearl™ Redbud in the Landscape

A perfect size for small space gardens, Black Pearl Redbud would capture attention as an anchor in your foundation planting. Make traffic slow down and even stop with one planted 20 feet from the corner of your home.

Place a single tree to cast shade and set the stage for an entertainment area. Use in a mulched bed, and underplant with a collection of low-maintenance Encore® Azaleas for their brilliant reblooming color.

On a larger lot, a series of Black Pearl Redbuds can become an unforgettable backdrop. Plant a natural-looking undulating row, varying the spacing between trees from 15 - 25 feet apart.

Include a Rising Sun Redbud as the main attraction in that lineup. Black Pearl's dark foliage would support the multicolored foliage of Rising Sun.

Love that dark foliage? Use that as a common theme in an all-black "Gothic Garden" for an unusual look. Partner with your favorite bloom color of Black Diamond® Crape Myrtles, then pop Tiny Wine Ninebark in the foreground.

These lovely trees look incredible when reflected in a water feature. Try them scattered around the edge of a pond to capture them at their best.

Grow them as part of an erosion control effort along creek beds. That showy foliage color softens a bit in partial shade, but will still stand-out in a crowd.

No yard? They can be grown in extra-large outdoor containers for many years as valuable living decor.

#ProPlantTips for Care

For the richest color, plant Black Pearl Redbud trees in full sun. They'll tolerate partial shade, but do color best with at least six hours of sunlight a day.

In hot climates, consider a planting site with afternoon shade. A three-inch layer of mulch over their root systems is a great idea to keep your tree happy and healthy.

They prefer well-drained soil, but can grow even in challenging clay soil type. They are naturally adaptable, and quite easy-care once established.

Get them off to the best start with a pack of Root Booster in your order. Add at planting time, following directions on the label to support your tree's ability to access nutrients and water from the surrounding soil along the life of the tree.

Provide a regular schedule of water, if you don't get adequate rainfall. Container-grown trees must be watered regularly to keep them alive.

Please be patient in springtime. Newly-installed Redbuds are notoriously slow to leaf out. We know you want to relish that deliciously dark color; good things take time!
