This is a compact form of native anise that has been bred to be better-behaved than other versions of illicium. (It is really a mid-sized shrub more than a small tree.) It won’t shoot out long gangly stems at random and the leaves won’t fade out in the winter. Instead, it stays in a nice round 3’ mound and has golden yellow leaves that practically glow in the shade.

The leaves smell like licorice when crushed or brushed so you’ll want to plant it somewhere where you can touch it and release the great smell into the garden.

Because of its smaller stature and compact habit it makes a great container plant and works well on the shady patio or porch.
